Covenant

The Webster Dictionary states the word covenant refers to: a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement. When I hear the word covenant, I immediately think of the promise God made to Noah after the flood waters receded. In Genesis 6-9, we hear that God makes a covenant with all generations to come that He will never again flood the earth. He will not destroy mankind or any living thing. God even gave Noah a sign of His commitment to us – a rainbow. Generations later, God sent His own son, Jesus to us as a new covenant. Jesus’ life, death and resurrection was a powerful sign of God’s love for us. He made a covenant, a promise that when we follow Jesus, we can live forever with Him.

In our generation, it is rare to hear the word covenant used in daily conversation. We might make a promise to a friend or sign our name agreeing to be bound by certain rules at school or in sports. We know, however, that under certain circumstances, we might change our minds and break a promise or rule. In contrast, God’s covenants with us can never be broken. He has made solemn, binding vows, one written by colors in the sky, one written by the blood of Jesus. God will never forsake us, even if we deviate from Him. As you go about this week, take time to watch for signs of God’s love and commitment to you. You may just find a rainbow around the corner.
