Listening to God

At times in life it seems like faith is just about going to Mass. Although, this is an important way to express our faith and praise God, it is also important to connect with God throughout our week. Connecting with God can take the form of turning to Him in prayer, recognizing the Creator in the beauty of spring or times of being quiet with God.

In our lives that are filled with TV, music, talking and constant noise it’s hard to find a quiet place. It may even be harder to find a time and place to be quiet with God. It reminds me of an experience I had with some college students.

The college chapel was filled with the chatter of students welcoming each other back to a new year of college. As the students began to quiet, you could hear a faint, yet constant noise in the background. Soon this noise intrigued the students and they fell silent. Once all talking stopped, the faint noise became clear. It was the sound of water pouring forth from a fountain that touched us all with its rhythm of life.

That fountain experience reminds me to quiet myself and listen to God. God is like that fountain who is constantly pouring forth life and graces for our lives. Many times we are too busy or our lives too noisy to hear God speaking to us. When we do find quiet time to spend with God, then we are able to dip into His waters and receive inspiration, encouragement and gifts He has ready for our lives. Take time this week to listen to God in your life.
