Getting Off Track

We are about two weeks into lent. We are a little over 2 months into the New Year. Some of us made New Year’s resolutions and most of us made Lenten promises, either a promise to do something or a promise to give up something or both!

So how are we all doing? There is the possibility that we are doing great, haven’t broken any of our promises and are really feeling strong! Great!! Or maybe, we are struggling and have broken a promise or resolution. We may feel like we are off track and wonder if we can even get back on track! What can we do?

The first place I like to start is Jesus! Talk to Him and ask for the strength to see our resolution or promise through to the end. We can “…do all things through Him who strengthens us!” Another way to jump start your motivation is to remind yourself why you made the promise to begin with and what you were hoping to accomplish. It really helps me to keep the goal in mind as I go through each struggle and feel weak. I always hope I will be a better person at the other end of Lent so I try to fight the weak moments with that thought. A third suggestion is to talk to a family member or a friend. It helps when we are doing something difficult to be able to talk about it with someone who cares and will help us through the tough spots.

Lastly, always remember that only God is perfect! We WILL get off track and He already knew it. The most important part of getting off track is ‘trying again’! This not only goes for Lenten promises but in life in general! Don’t be afraid to try something hard and don’t be afraid of getting off track. Just be certain that you will try again! Ask Jesus and ask a friend or family member to be there with you as you try again. It really works!
